Published 6:48 AM EDT Jun 22, 2015 In the early 20th century, the corner of East Avenue and Gibbs Street, like much of Rochester's downtown at the time, was a mixed-use area where residential and commercial spaces intertwined. For many years, the signature structure of the intersection's northeast junction was the Wentworth Apartments, seen here in 1923. A variety of professionals and entrepreneurs, including lawyers, milliners and music teachers, populated the apartments on the building's upper floors, while its lower floors housed stores such as the Kiddies Toggery Shop and Marinello's Beauty Shoppe.
From the collection of the Rochester Public Library Local History Division A few years before this photo was taken, the Wentworth Apartments gained a Yawman and Erbe store as its next-door neighbor. Though perhaps no longer a readily recognizable brand, the Yawman and Erbe Manufacturing Co. Was one of top producers of office supplies in the country for the better part of a century. Founded by two former Bausch + Lomb employees in the late 1800s, the outfit went on to manufacture everything from filing systems and desks to metal interiors for vaults and banks.
The firm's patented 'fire-wall' technology protected the valuables and documents stored within its filing cabinets and safes against fire and extreme heat. The innovation likely saved a number of important items in the company's storefront when a conflagration struck its neighboring apartment building in 1923. In the early morning hours of Nov. 15, a defective switch sparked a blaze in the basement of the Wentworth Apartments, which then snaked its way up the building's five floors. All of its tenants managed to escape unaided except for 10 denizens who needed to be carried to the street. The fire was brought under control six hours after the alarm had sounded, by which time the Wentworth's apartments and stores had been gutted, resulting in about $100,000 worth of damage.

The building's 60 residents took temporary refuge at the nearby Sagamore Hotel (now East Avenue Commons) but were never to return to their old homestead. The remnants of the Wentworth building were razed, and in 1925, the Lincoln Building was erected in its place. Designed by Gordon and Kaelber, the same firm responsible for the First Church of Christ, Scientist, and the Eastman Theatre, the Lincoln Building went on to house a number of professional practices. Over the course of the 20th century, its tenants included insurance agents, accountants and engineers. The corner of East Avenue and Gibbs Street has since made the transition from a professional center to a musical hub. The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra maintains its administrative offices in the old Yawman and Erbe storefront while the Eastman Community Music School has called the Lincoln Building home since 2004. Sounds of student performances frequently emanate from the multi-windowed rehearsal space on the building's ground floor.
