Review: Californian bass crusader makes himself known on DNDD with four heavyweight cuts. 'Midnight Wax' soundtracks a paranoid graveyard prowl, all shadows and owl hoots. 'Secret Society' is a harmonically fine-tuned stepper that's tailored for the biggest of rigs while 'White Magic' blows cosmic pipe wind into our third eyes with total dubspace satisfaction and 'Kula Kula' takes us deep into the north African deserts with immense and foreboding results. Remix-wise Caidance adds layers of hazy mystical atmospheres while The Widdler fazes out the vocal and remoulds our attention to the drums. Debuts don't come much stronger than this.
Review: This five-track single provides a taster for s/t, the debut album from Traxx, Beau Wanzer and Steve Summers aka Mutant Beat Dance. Produced in the trio's signature grainy style, it features the baby samples and moody, repetitive bass-led 'Toy Story' as well as a possible cross over track in the shape of the jittery punk-funk and scratchy guitars of 'Feed The Enemy', a collaboration with Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem. Despite this fleeting flirtation with fame, this release also shows that Mutant Beat Dance haven't forgotten their past: 'Funk Groove' is a swampy piece of electro-funk and 'Revival 80s' mines a path through the basement moods and dusty drum machines of 80s proto-house. Review: As the title suggestions, this tidy two-tracker offers up fresh dub-wise revisions of tracks from virtuoso keys player Joe Armon-Jones's superb solo debut album 'Starting Today'. It's a revision of the album's title track that pops up first, with the Ezra Collective member delivering a rolling, reverb and delay-laden version that layers his jammed-out keys and woozy horns over a sweaty, slipped jazz-house beat and warm, life-affirming bassline. Ashebar lends a hand on a new version of album favourite 'Mollison Dub', toasting impressively over a heavy dub riddim, echoing horn blasts, delay-laden percussion hits and the kind of sub-heavy bassline that will sound spectacular coming out of a Jamaican style valve amp-powered soundsystem. Review: The futuristic dub stylings of renowned imprint: Scotch Bonnet are back on display with some serious style as the team gather up twelve tracks for their explosive second edition of the 'Puffers Choice' compilation series.
There are refined dubstyle flavours throughout, with our immediate favourites coming from Wolves and Bo Johnson, who provides innovative grooves and creative melodies on 'Follow Me', whilst Chief Rockas and Supercat combine on the dancehall stylings of 'Dance Inna New York'. The dark vocal pressure of General Jah Mikey also deserves a mention as he provides the fire alongside Naram on 'Ites, Green & Gold'. Review: It's always exciting to see new music from Radikal Guru hit the shelves. This release see's two classic works recreated in remix form none other than dubstep heavyweight DJ Madd and Melbourne's own bass maverick: Sekkleman. Madd steps up first with his gutter twist up of 'Back Off' featuring exhilarating vocals from the legendary Solo Banton.
On the flip, Sekkleman builds an explosive steppers recreation of 'Raggamuffin Soldier', which of course features a lively vocal performance from Echo Ranks. Review: Psychologist-turned-producer Andy Rantzen has never been particularly prolific, though we were surprised to learn that this EP is his first solo single for the best part of 20 years (for the record, he released a digital-only album two years ago). It's an interesting and ear-pleasing affair that may raise a few eyebrows. Traditionally, he's delivered lo-fi electronica and experimental techno.
On 1/66, three of the four tracks see him take a leisurely, freshly baked stroll through digital dub pastures. Of these, it's the thrillingly bass-heavy, ghostly digital dub of 'Fantasy Dub' and stabbing 'Green River' that most impress, though jaunty digi-dub opener 'Rock Steady' may get most club plays. Review: There is nothing more enjoyable that opening a fresh box of top draw roots reggae recordings, which is exactly what Jamie Irie has supplied us with here as he unveils the super smooth 'Be There'.
